Day 6 - Gijon

We left Santillana and went out to the coast. We expected some cute little farm towns along the shore. Instead they were tourist beach towns full of people. It looked like southern California. We drove west along the coast through one town after another and then turned south into the mountains. There are 9000 foot high mountains just a few miles inland. We had a map with some small roads on them. We wound up the mountain sides on great roads. It is motorcycle heaven. We spent about 3 hours on tight twisty roads going over several passes. The road surface was excellent.

In the mountains there were more motorcycles that cars. I talked to 4 groups of them. Three of the groups were from England. They take a ferry from Portsmouth, England to the north shore. There were 135 of them that came together. They were riding in groups of 4 or 5. They were on everything from a 1981 Binelli 6 cylinder to a couple of new VFR1200s. There were a lot of BMWs. They say the traffic is so bad in England that they go to Spain whenever they can. The roads are great, there is next to no traffic in the hills and no cops.

On the way out of the hills we stopped in a quaint little village. The tour book said that “it was somewhat touristy". Is  was completely jammed with tourists. It was a Sunday afternoon and the people here must love to visit these kinds of places. No problem as we stay away from tourist towns the best we can.

Our Parador tonight is in Gijon in the city. It is an old mill but you wouldn’t know it. It is in a city park. Our room looks out on a lake with lots of waterfowl. It is ¼ mile from the beach. We went for a walk along the promenade along the beach. It was full of couples and families.  People here stay up until late and love to walk. They don’t eat dinner until 9 or 10 o’clock.
